Journals

Journal #13
I agree with Turner's argument.  The media has us under control. It is not healthy to revolve information on the media. Well, it depends where the information comes from. Sometimes media is too personal and express their own opinions, such as the Fox News. They use they're own personal opinions. To make it sound as if those people didn't use first person they claim as " some people may say," or something that relates to that. Also, there is many information that are false. There is false information just to make the world seem as a "crazy" world. But to go on media also announces news that aren't really "news." For example, many celebrities get pregnant, on the news, seems to be the spotlight of the week while there's many important things that go on the world.

In the writer's claim, I believe he tries to assert that now in days politics is not as how they were back in the day. Now political news are about more on gossip and people's private lives, and not about actual news that goes on such as issues and policies. I would have to agree with this writer because news to us is not exactly considered news. We are just considering it news because that is what it is displaying as "news." For example, take Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Their split was probably the top 10 ranking because they were getting divorced. Many people who aren't celebrities get a divorce, and yet it is not displayed in the news because is not as important as political issues that go on in this world. But, since they're celebrities, the divorce made the spotlight of the news. Now in days, what we consider as news isn't exactly news. Well, it depends what news article or broadcast we listen and see to.

The poem, "We Wear the Mask," by Paul Dunbar, examines the social dissembling in the world in which the author lived at the end of the 19th century. Dunbar claims, mostly in the second stanza that the world need to be aware of the true feelings of the suffers. This poem explain how society tries to hide the true meaning of the world. That we don't, as human beings, know the truth in the society we live in. We all tend to hide what is within us.

I believe that Arnold's main claim is how the government has been invading many people. Even if there is privacy, there's an extent of privacy that everyone has. The meaning of privacy is different between the government and the people. I would disagree with Arnold. In my perspective, there still needs to have some kind of surveillance in case there is some kind of danger. For example, personally, I wouldn't mind the government looking over my phone calls, messages because I have nothing to hide. There are some aspects where I do disagree with the government, but that is where we have to speak up, have a voice.

Language has be used to challenge ideological norms. Language is a strong tool to use. For example an example that happened recently was the women's march. Women used their language on standing up for themselves. Women in the Washington Girls March Event used their language to describe what it is to be a woman. Women are strong and have just as much as rights as men. The idea they were trying to show is that women are not weak. With the language that they demonstrated at the march was very powerful, the way they stood up fro themselves. It was a powerful march.

This world is set to be a "free world." There are some degrees where this is true and untrue. The freedom to speak and to have a voice has been already accomplished. Now, women are being able to vote. There is many reasons that has changed, in a positive way, throughout history. Having the same right for men and women equally, having the right to vote, and the ability to be bale to have a voice and to stand up for yourself, has been a huge impact of the world. Yet with freedom, there also comes a catch, such as privacy.
I disagree that this world is being stated as an "unfree world." For myself, I wouldn't mind Government lurking through my phone calls, there is nothing for me to hide. And if there is something wrong that we disagree from the government, the that is why we have freedom of speech. We can change the world by our words and language. I believe what makes us have a voice is by having a free world, which is what we have. If we didn't have a free world, we wouldn't have been able to stand up for what we believe in.

No one gets their way from people who have oppressed them. People who have been oppressed, they never had the ability to just talk. The people who are in control wouldn't have paid attention. The only way to try to gain freedom were riots. People fought for their freedom. The freedoms that exist to this day, were not accomplished in past history. And in order to get freedom, able to fight for people's rights was the answer for the oppressed.
Oppressors have only achieved and done things for themselves, and not really for others. For example, slavery was an issue. Many African Americans were struggling and suffering due to taking order from the Whites. Oppressors always tend to threaten the victims. They never cared what the people who were struggling had to say, as long as the oppressor were in control of the people. In the past history freedom for may people were a struggle. Now, we have so much freedom and have equal rights for men and women. We wouldn't have these kinds of freedoms if back then, people didn't fight for their rights.

It is said, many times, we have to conquer our fears. In Nelson Mandela's quote, it is similar to that kind of saying. Mandela claims how in order to grow we must triumph our weaknesses, we must arise from fear, we must conquer whatever it is that holds us down in order to grow. I would have to agree with Mandela's quote.
In order to grow as a human being, we cannot take the easy ways out. Taking the easy way out can lead us into ore difficulties in the later future. We can't succeed if we can't handle hard situations, if we run away from our problems. Facing our fears, will lead us into the right direction without fears, we would be nothing. There is a reason why we have fears and difficulties. Fear and difficulties are ways of us knowing how we deal with a situation, and will tell us how we react to them. Either we run away from it or we come challenge ourselves to make a better us. We need to face fear because it teaches us how we handle certain aspect in the world. When we conquer our fears is when we succeed and feel accomplished.

There is no easy way out in life, I believe. Happy moments don't always appear. There will always be sad and happy situations. Sadly enough, there isn't going to be positives in everything. Sometimes we have to deal with a situation that isn't the best. But how we overcome with sad or bad situations is important. I agree with Dolly Parton's quote because we do have to put up with the rain in order to see a rainbow.
We do need to put up rain in order to see the light. That is how life is. Sometimes life if dark, sometimes its negative. But, the darkness and negative will never stay forever. That is because light comes. "There will always be a light at the end of the tunnel." Life gives us rain, gives us darkness, but at some point life will give us light and color and beauty. Everything will get better at some point. There will always be bad aspects we don't want to have or choose to have, but they're there and we have to conquer and cope with them in order to grow. There will be rain, but the rainbow, at one point, will appear.
